The mid-terms are about so much more than Biden

Rick @ Notes From England

The US mid-term elections are looming. However weak Biden has been or is - however catastrophic his decision to withdraw from Afghanistan was, he is infinitely preferable to the old Trump Regime. I shudder to think what would be happening in Ukraine and Europe if Trump had been in power? We may have even witnessed the dismantling of NATO and Autocracy winning over Democracy. The thought of Europe having to battle against both Russia and America would be a nightmare.

We should be under no misunderstanding that Trump is - in his heart an Autocrat and, if ever elected again, would be an even more disastrous president than last time, for not just the USA but the whole world. We would have more of what was - but magnified and worse.

The fact that the Republican party has become so far right, partisan, and so divisive is beyond my understanding. Do they seriously represent the American People? Is this what the majority of Republican Americans want? Are leaders such as Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy so overtaken with power that they can no longer see the difference between right and wrong? Power for power's sake, whatever the cost - that is Autocracy. Democracy is about the people's will - to be responsible, to listen, and lead for the good of everyone, not just the selected few - and more than anything, to be honest and accountable.

It is not about lining the pockets of the few, divisive language and subverting the rule of law; Autocracy is anti-freedom, and I always thought that was the same as being anti-American.

I absolutely get left of centre and right of centre. I understand that most people will vote for the candidate they think will take forward their views, or they will get the most return. But I remain utterly defeated in understanding how anyone could think to vote for someone as obnoxious as Marjorie Taylor Greene? Unfortunately, there is a rather long list now of other Republican Congress Representatives and Senators who are no better than her, which does not bode well for the USA.

Look at the difference between a leader like Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who lives for the good of his people - always inclusive, always putting them first, only there to serve his people - and then compare him with the Republican Party of the USA. It is both revealing and shocking.

So it will all be down to the hearts, the courage and the character of the American people. In God We Trust - and time will tell.

I don't know if that will be enough, though? The world is fighting for survival on many fronts; CO2 immissions, pollution, overpopulation, global warming, and consequent damage to our biosphere. Perhaps before those battles can be fought and hopefully won - there will have to be a fight between Autocracy and Democracy. It is a fearful thought. As ghastly as that prospect is, perhaps it is better than the alternative.
